Overcoming Exercise Anxiety

Updated: Mar 28, 2022

Those of us that suffer with anxiety know all too well that overwhelming feeling when it strikes. And its certainly a culprit when faced with the dilemma of whether to exercise or not. That sudden fear of people judging you, feeling trapped by your body that you loathe and held hostage by your mind's negative thoughts- yep, the anxiety levels can really soar.

Its crippling when deep down you are wanting to make changes to better your health however, those strong, anxious emotions stop us from even attempting to go.

So I put together a list of tips to help you beat your gym anxiety:

1. First things first - wear clothes that make you feel good and fit nicely. This will make you feel better and more confident whilst working out.

2. Walk to your destination- whether its a class, the gym, a bootcamp, anything, park a little further away and walk. The fresh air and the blood starting to pump around the body, will all help to relax you and reset your thoughts before beginning any session.

3. Music- especially if your in the gym, then this is a welcomed distraction from those relentless unhelpful thoughts

4. Ignore your brain- Yeah I know, easier said than done. But its a case of actually not thinking and just doing. Your brain won't have time then to assess the situation and bring about those anxieties.

5. Do something you enjoy- don't try to make yourself do some thing you dont enjoy doing. Its likely you won't feel comfortable, plus it won't serve you long term in sticking to a plan.

6. Train with others. If you dont like the idea of training alone, then grab yourself a training partner or book yourself into a class. This will help build your confidence, plus, you'll have others to be accountable too

7. If in doubt, book sessions in with a PT. Learn what to do first, so you have the knowledge and skills and that in turn will build your confidence for long term results.
