5 Simple Ways to Help You Move More Daily

Updated: Mar 28, 2022

Sitting being idle can be detrimental to your health. And I think we all know that we should be moving more.

But days can can be long. Get the kids up ready for school, sit in traffic, straight to the office, spend hours in meetings, pick up the kids, take them home, feed them, take them to their after school clubs, wash them, get them ready for bed and by the time you look at the clock, it’s 9pm and time for you to eat what' can be salvaged and sleep.

Yep the days can be long. I hear ya.

So here are some daily tips to get your body moving more throughout the day:

1. Park far away from the office/ supermarket etc. YOU WOULD HAVE DEFINITELY HEARD THIS. And for good reason. Walking is highly underrated as a form of exercise. It uses your posterior chain ( all of the muscles from your upper back down to the achilles). These effectively hold you up right and create movements such as running, walking and even standing. So, if you are sitting all day, you will want to "wake" them up.

2. Stretch every hour. For those who are up and out of their seats for most of the day, great, you can do this pretty much very time. But if you find yourself stuck sitting for best part of 7 hours with not even a toilet break, you will want to do this every hour. Keeping it simple, reach all the way over head with both arms and then slowly, keeping the legs straight, reach down to the toes. You can also add in some rotations to each side after.

3. Say NO to the sofa. I know its tempting after a long day to curl and lounge on the sofa, but for the body, that is not what it wants. Lay on the floor with the arms and legs stretch out to relieve compression throughout the joints . This will hit the entire body so its a MUST do. Sitting in "frogs" or crossed legged, keeping the spine completely upright is great for opening out the hips and mobilising them. These are just the veery basics. 4. Utilise the weekends. For most, our weekends are our own time, so if the working week doesn't allow for much movement time, then the weekends need to be made the most of.

5. Entertain the kids. Throw the iPads and games to one side and join in with play time. Go out side and play ball games with them, or find a local park for them to run around in or just simply head out for a walk. Not only does it wear them out ready for a restful night of sleep, but keeps you active as well.

Making these small changes to your daily routine will massively benefit your health now and for the future and can you really afford not too?
